GPS Accuracy

We are often confronted with questions related to the accuracy or inaccuracy of a record, or how accurate in general geolocation is. The answer to almost all questions related to accuracy is, unfortunately, "it depends." The number of factors affecting accuracy are many, and out of the control of our developer as they are related to specific use of hardware, algorithms, length of time to ascertain location, settings on the phone - such as Wi-Fi turned on or off- and dozens of others. We'd encourage you to search on this topic if you'd like to delve into the specifics of variables affecting location services.

In most cases - our experience has been that accuracy is pretty good. But even that is subjective. Is accuracy to the parking lot outside the building adequate, or accuracy to the check in desk on the third floor the acceptable level? In most cases, the fact that geolocation is being used is enough to deter attempts to report false locations; but it's also why - regardless of the method of reporting time - we include the "last mile" of human supervision - the approval of time records - preferably by a person at the site familiar with the students' comings and goings- before times are included in each students' totals.

In the event that no location can be ascertained, a yellow block will be displayed and can mean any of the following:

- Geolocation is not supported by device.
- User denied the request for geolocation.
- Location information is unavailable.
- The request to get user location timed out.
- An unknown error occurred.
