Competency exams and all other evaluations require the designation of one or more "scoring types". We've recently expanded the number of evaluations that can be created by your program - you can now set up pretty much whatever you need! Competency exams have their scoring set in a different place than other evaluations, although the options and settings are quite similar. At right is the Score Settings page for Competencies (located under the Comp/Log Setup menu item), which is clearly marked in the dark green area. You will find a similar Score Types page area in the Eval/Form Setup area for all other types of evaluations, with similar default and setting options.
While changing values should not change already submitted competencies, do this with much thoughtfulness, preferably between classes and after backing up all existing records.
You may view or create more than one scoring type per evaluation or competency.
The column "Default" refers to the Default Value discussed later.
In most cases, you won't need weighted scoring. To view an existing score type, click the edit icon. To create a new type, click the "Add New" button at the bottom.
In the screenshot at right, you'll see the top portion of the Score Types edit screen. To the right of the boxes, you'll see the explanations we've provided to assist you.
Score Name - You may choose whatever name you wish, but it's good to associate the name with the type of evaluation you intend to use it for, and perhaps the way you plan to use it (such as "Likert 1-5", or "yes-no", or "US").
Default Value - You can choose to have the items using this scoring type pre-selected. This greatly reduces the time required to complete the evaluation, since only the items that the evaluator wishes to change need to be selected by him. Most programs provide a default for evaluations, but some feel that the evaluator should think carefully before responding and prefer that there be no default value.
Competency evaluation value - The explanation is presented to the right of the box. Selecting a value associated with the numbered boxes below will force a comment from the evaluator below this level; the exam cannot be submitted until a comment is inserted.
Comp Exam Failure Criteria - You can designate how many items can be missed at a designated level (the numbered boxes below) for the evaluation to be marked as Not Approved. The designation of "Not Approved" will appear on the "Comp Exam/Validation" page and as an asterisk on the comp evaluation date on the Skill Summary. Note that if the evaluator understands your criterion correctly, he will also mark the evaluation "Not Approved." If he incorrectly approves the evaluation, it will still be flagged on both of the above pages. Incidentally, the evaluation will also be flagged if the evaluator marks the evaluation as Not Approved even if the specified criterion is met.
Below is the second half of the Add/Edit Scoring Type page. Note that the boxes are pre-numbered. These are the numbers referred to in the default value, performance and comp eval values, and comp exam failure criteria level. You cannot change the numbers for these boxes.
Labels - This is the text associated with the item to be completed. In most cases, the text will contain words such as "Satisfactory" or "Excellent".
Value for Averages - Always start with the lowest value in box 1, then increase. In this case at right, the values are straightforward. Other programs do not prefer 0-100 averaging and designate values such as 1 for the label "Unsatisfactory" and 2 for the label "Satisfactory." In this case, averaging will still occur but will now range between 0 and 2 (such as "1.45").
At right is another example of a score type. Note that is is possible to combine the score type above with the score type at right in the same examination; but if this is done, averaging will not be accurate. If 2 items were created using the 10-100 system and 2 with the U/S system and the label "10" were selected twice and the label "S" were selected twice, then they would be averaged:
"100 + 100 + 1 + 1 = 202/4" so that the average displayed would be "50.5." after completion. Obviously, this isn't correct! So... be sure to use the same system for values for averages across all score types to be used within the same evaluation.
N/A - Note that in the example above, "N/A" has no value associated with it... and it should never have, as allowing N/A means that answering the item is optional, and if selected, no value is assigned to this item within the evaluation. For instance, if there were 3 items on an evaluation with values 0 and 1, and the evaluator marked the first "S", the second "N/A", and the third "0", then the system would calculate the averages as "1 + 0 = 1/2 = .5". Note that the averaging did not include the item marked "N/A".
